15 stages to discover the ever-changing landscapes The 15-stage circular cycle route starts in Maratea, on the Tyrrhenian coast of Basilicata, and returns there after covering 750 km through the region’s Protected Areas. From Maratea, the route heads towards the Pollino National Park, reaching the highest point of the entire journey at 1.458 metres.
It then continues southeast towards the Ionian side and the Calanchi Park, before arriving in Matera, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. From the Murgia Park, the route leads to the Gallipoli Cognato Piccole Dolomiti Lucane Regional Park, then ascends towards Venosa, Melfi, and the Vulture Park, before descending into the Appennino Lucano Val d’Agri Lagonegrese National Park and finally returning to Maratea.
The route passes through natural landscapes of rare beauty, following a delightful path along the bridges and tunnels of the former Calabro-Lucana railway, while also crossing or skirting historic towns and villages.
